The Colcom Foundation was founded by the late CEO and entrepreneur Cordelia S. May. In 1996, May understood the wonders of the environment and how the abuses are affecting the quality of human life. The issue overpopulation, in particular, is having the biggest impact in terms of ecological balance. It is up to the earth’s population to make the changes.
As the foundation sees it, there are two problems: practical and moral.
The practical problem refers to what scientists describe as the Sixth Mass Extinction. It is one of the greatest threats facing humanity to date. The crisis is currently unraveling the biological life support on the earth.
With the moral issue, there is the balance of both human and non-human life. The mass extinction is the equivalent of genocide against the natural world.
The Colcom Foundation has interest in many areas: carrying capacity, local environment, and local community. The carrying capacity deals with family planning and immigration. Family planning utilizes the media to get more information out regarding ways to deal with unplanned pregnancy and the reduction of birth rates globally.
The Pew Research poll reports that 88 percent of the U.S. population growth is tied directly to immigration. The Federation for American Immigration Reform seeks ways to make immigration more sustainable. When current immigration levels are reduced, the U.S. is able to decrease the population and shrink its ecological footprint.
The Colcom Foundation also supports the local environment with several projects around the state of Pennsylvania. Conservation efforts are going on with the Hollow Oak Land Trust, The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, and WeConservePA.
There are environmental projects going on in several counties. Most of the efforts involve the preservation of waterways, land restoration and other sustainable practices. All of these efforts will enrich the quality of people in southwestern Pennsylvania. Refer to this article for related information.
