Alliance Defending Freedom

Alliance Defending Freedom is a nonprofit human rights organization specializing in public interest litigation, education, training and counseling on religious freedom, the sanctity of life & marriage, parental rights and constitutional protections. The Alliance Defending Freedom inspires hope for thousands annually who risk losing their freedoms to important but emerging threats, including the LGBT movement.

A broad coalition of organizations from across the political spectrum file amicus briefs with us on cases challenging bans on political speech. We have taken cases to the Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. A few examples highlight our approach:

We defended Boy Scouts’ First Amendment right to speak about religious values. The District Court had imposed an unprecedented preliminary injunction barring the BSA from speaking about Scouting’s character-building benefits, and the Supreme Court unanimously affirmed our victory in United States v. Louisiana BSA Council, No. 10-1536, 895 F. 3d 988 (2015)

We filed an amicus brief opposing a proposed federal law forcing pro-life pregnancy centers to advertise their services to receive government funds. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit unanimously held that the law violates the First Amendment.

We defended a student’s freedom to speak about Christianity on campus. The district court had ordered him to stop sharing his faith with other students, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit reversed that decision and held that it is unconstitutional for a public university to suppress a student’s free speech rights to avoid offense or civil unrest.

The Alliance Defending Freedom also defends people’s right to live according to their consciences through its Center for Conscience Protection and Center for Life.

The Alliance also has an affiliate, the Judicial Education Fund, which provides grants to citizen groups and other organizations interested in pursuing lawsuits that protect religious freedom, parental rights and constitutional protections.

During the 2016 campaign season, the Alliance Defending Freedom used a ‘religious freedom’ billboard at a Virginia intersection featuring Hillary Clinton with the message “We can’t let Hillary take away your religious liberty.” Some denounced the advertisement as “disturbing” and as a “scare tactic” by others.
