Diversity, equity, and inclusion are the pillars most important for a successful community. Shelton Haynes, president, and CEO of Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation, claimed that his administration understood these principles’ importance before taking on his leadership position. By following these concepts, he created a thriving community for all residents. When assuming the role of President & CEO in 2021, Haynes knew that he had to follow through with his philosophies. Haynes sought a diverse team for Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation because he believed it would lead to better decision-making and better service. Haynes is the first Black man to be a chief operations officer for RIOC.
The Balancing Act: Constructing A High Functioning Team & Remodeling RIOC
The RIOC was created by New York State in 1984. It’s a public benefit corporation, which means it was developed with a mission to design, develop, operate, and maintain Roosevelt Island. The progress of Haynes’ administration has been great for the many residents and millions of tourists who visit Roosevelt Island. “The work has been tremendous,” Haynes said. “We’ve created many opportunities for Roosevelt Island and the surrounding area.” Shelton Haynes began restructuring RIOC, emphasizing top-tier employees in roles that would set the company up for success. For Shelton Haynes, the experience of each individual was key when hiring. He believes that RIOC needs people who have a good understanding of what’s going on every day. They also need to be open-minded, willing to learn and do whatever is necessary.
Shelton Haynes Built a Strong RIOC Executive Team
A huge part of Haynes’ administration was restructuring the RIOC executive team. The new executive team that was put in place has helped create a strong image for the entire organization. Mary C. Cunneen oversees the maintenance and repair of buildings and structures on the island. Robinson is a vice president for economic development who sets up real estate projects around Roosevelt Island. Jamal is a member of Haynes’ team that focuses on government affairs, communications, building community engagement, and marketing. The biggest part about this executive team is that it’s filled with an impressive level of diversity. According to Haynes, these talented individuals have fostered great success for the company. Their unique ability to galvanize the troops has allowed RIOC to flourish and reach its full potential.
