JD.com Founder, Richard Liu

Richard Liu Qiangdong is the creator of JD.com, formerly Jingdong and 360buy Ltd., and has served as its director and in the highest authoritative position since its origination in 2004.

Liu was born and raised in Chang’an, a bantam enclave outside the city of Suqian located in China’s Jiangsu province. The rural area lacked contemporary amenities such as running water and electricity. Although Liu’s family tree was descended from affluent Chinese vendors who shipped products along the Yellow River, his parents were poor farmers.

When it was time for Liu Qiangdong to join the university, he confined his applications to large urban centers such as Beijing and Shanghai. Due to his illustrious marks on his college entry tests, he got a place at the celebrated Renmin University. Aside from being ambitious, Liu could gather people behind him. Although his family alone could not pay for the rail ticket to Beijing, the village occupants gave him money for his journey. Those who could not offer financial aid supplied him with eggs that would sustain him throughout the train ride to Beijing and a week after arriving at the university.

In 2004, Richard Liu officially named his company JD.com, which stands for Jingdong and has since grown to become one of the largest e-commerce retailers in the world. Liu’s success is largely attributed to his keen business understanding and ability to think outside the box regarding marketing strategies and product development.

As JD.com’s founder, Qiangdong is credited with revolutionizing the Chinese e-commerce market. His company has introduced innovative services such as same-day delivery and 24/7 customer service. He has expanded JD.com’s reach beyond China to other countries in Asia, Europe, and North America through his efforts.

In addition to his business success, Richard Liu is a philanthropist who believes in giving back to those who have supported him throughout his life. He donates money and resources to charities that focus on providing education opportunities for children from low-income families and is an advocate for environmental conservation efforts in China.
