Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola Spearheads Cybercrime Research Centre in Partnership with EFCC and FBI

In a groundbreaking initiative to combat internet crime and fortify the security of online transactions, Flutterwave, a prominent African payment services provider, has joined forces with Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the United States Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). The strategic partnership aims to establish a state-of-the-art Cybercrime Research Centre, which Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola will lead.

The meaningful collaboration was formalized on June 14, 2024, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Abuja between Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola and EFCC Secretary Mohammadu Hammajoda. The event was graced by EFCC Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede, Flutterwave Chief Compliance Officer Mobolaji Bammeke, and FBI Director Christopher Gray, underscoring the significance of this partnership.

Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola emphasized the company’s steadfast commitment to promoting secure and safe transactions, stating, “This initiative underscores our commitment to creating a fraud-free financial ecosystem and leading the charge in safeguarding transactions across Africa. We applaud the EFCC’s relentless efforts to combat internet fraud and other illicit activities in the financial sector.”

The Cybercrime Research Centre, set to be established at the new EFCC Academy, will serve as a hub for advanced research, training, and capacity building in the fight against financial crimes. It will focus on several key areas, including advanced fraud detection and prevention, collaborative research and policy development, youth empowerment and capacity building, and technological advancement and resource enablement.

Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola highlighted the center’s importance in developing and implementing cutting-edge technologies to detect and prevent financial fraud. The center will offer comprehensive training for law enforcement and industry professionals to combat modern financial crimes effectively. Additionally, it will provide 500 youths with high-end training and research opportunities, equipping them with the necessary skills to navigate and excel in the digital economy.

EFCC Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede praised Flutterwave’s impressive strides and expanse across Africa, stating, “This partnership marks a significant leap forward in our efforts to combat financial crimes and ensure a secure financial landscape for Nigerians. The Cybercrime Research Centre will significantly enhance our capabilities to prevent, detect, and prosecute financial crimes.”

The collaboration between Flutterwave, EFCC, and FBI demonstrates the critical role of public-private partnerships in addressing the growing threat of financial fraud. As the payments ecosystem continues to evolve, the prevalence of financial crimes remains a significant challenge, undermining the stability and trust in economic systems. The Cybercrime Research Centre, under the leadership of Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola, aims to tackle this issue head-on by facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing between the public and private sectors, providing access to advanced tools, technologies, and resources to combat financial crimes, including cryptocurrency-related offenses.

This pioneering initiative, spearheaded by Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola, marks a significant milestone in the fight against cybercrime in Nigeria and across Africa. By harnessing the expertise and resources of Flutterwave, EFCC, and FBI, the Cybercrime Research Centre is poised to impact the financial security landscape, fostering a safer and more trustworthy environment for online transactions.
