Why Colcom Foundation Focuses on Overpopulation and the Environment

Environmental organizations typically stake out a single cause: clean water, forest preservation, climate policy. Colcom Foundation‘s approach is somewhat different. Rather than targeting one environmental outcome, the Pittsburgh-based philanthropy focuses on what it views as an underlying driver: the relationship between population growth and the long-term degradation of natural systems.

The Foundation’s Origins

Colcom Foundation was established in 1996 by Cordelia S. May, who funded it substantially through her estate following her death in 2005. Mrs. May came to environmental philanthropy young. By 1952, at just 23 years old, she was supporting family planning initiatives out of genuine concern for the natural world and its capacity to support human quality of life over time.

Her core conviction was that population growth, unfolding gradually enough to escape daily notice, accumulates into an overwhelming force. The result is visible in what Colcom Foundation’s About page describes as aquatic and terrestrial habitat destruction, pollution, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem collapse environmental consequences rarely linked to population dynamics in public conversation, even when that link is direct and demonstrable.

Framing the Mission

Colcom Foundation’s primary mission is to foster a sustainable environment ensuring quality of life for all Americans, with explicit attention to the causes and consequences of overpopulation and its effects on natural resources. The foundation also supports conservation projects, environmental programs, and cultural assets at the regional level. Through their grants, they have supported many organizations, such as the Center for Biological Diversity, which works towards protecting endangered species, and the Sierra Club Foundation, which advocates for clean energy and climate solutions. These grants have helped to advance important causes and support organizations that strive to make a difference.

The About page frames Mrs. May as part of a lineage of forward-thinking reformers who were misunderstood before history proved them right. Colcom Foundation presents its grantmaking as the institutional expression of that tradition, designed to honor its founder’s foresight, humanitarian perspective, and long-term commitment to ecological balance throughout the communities it serves.
