Robert Kraft is the current owner of the New England Patriots. He is worth 2 billion dollars. He is married with three kids and has two residences in Florida, including his 8000 square foot Miami mansion. In 2003, he started to share his interest in architecture with others by building a private residence for Jay-Z and Beyonce. The Krafts own property or do business on every continent except Antarctica and are said to be one of America’s most generous philanthropists.
In years prior, he was a member of the board of directors of the FAU School of Architecture and Design. Creative architecture students presented him and his family with a gift at “Toast to Architecture” – an annual presentation designed to honor individuals and institutions who have significantly contributed to the world of architecture. A selection committee selected four winners—Vinny Guadagnino, Michael Kassner, Mark Santora, and Joshua Wallach—for their ingenuity and design sense. The concept drawing was a typical man’s pre-design world. On the left, a “Pocket ATM” contained Kraft’s private jet and valet parking, and the right-hand side of the drawing contained luxury sports cars—a Ferrari 458 Italia, Bugatti Veyron and Maserati Quattroporte. The drawing showed five pools, but only three at the end: one for Robert Kraft, one for his kids and one for Phil Mickelson. Text on the page was a tip of the hat to Kraft’s love of contemporary art, which includes a collection by Jeff Koons and Henry Moore, as well as an Andy Warhol piece.
The idea behind this project is that we are not designing for just one client but multiple clients. Since we are designing a concept structure and context, it is important that we address all perspectives involved and in this case our client was Robert Kraft and his family.
