Chris Brummer: Professor & Faculty Director at Georgetown University Law Center.

Brummer’s legal practice is well-known in Georgetown Community. He has argued in numerous cases before the Supreme Court of the United States, the European Court of Human Rights, the International Court of Justice, and the European Union, as well as before the United Nations, the World Bank, the International Labour Organization, and many other international bodies. 

Chris Brummer is a foreign policy advisor to the US Department of State and has been named an expert on global financial regulation by the European Parliament, United Nations, and World Bank. Brummer is a practicing attorney and columnist who has written about international trade for over thirty-five years. In his many roles, including as Professor & Faculty Director of the Institute of International Economic Law at Georgetown University Law Center, he has played a critical role in the development of international law. 

Brummer is the author of numerous books, including The Law and Economics of Transnational Regulation (Cambridge University Press, 2012), which received the American Society of International Law Certificate of Merit in 2013. He has also authored several articles on issues such as state intervention in financial markets, regulatory competition between states, and international tax competition. 

Chris Brummer has taught as a visiting professor at the University of Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne), the University of Geneva, and the European University Institute. The Institute of International Peace Law has produced authoritative texts on international law and practice for the past two decades. The Institute also provides strategic consulting services, which is essential for the ongoing success of the law school as a leading research and teaching center for international law. 

Brummer has represented clients in disputes brought before the World Trade Organization, Appellate Body, Panel, and Dispute Settlement Body. Besides his work on behalf of governments and industry associations, he has served as counsel for several companies. 

Chris Brummer frequently comments on current economic issues for print media and radio stations worldwide. He is also an occasional contributor to “Forbes,” “The New York Times,” “The Wall Street Journal,” and other major news outlets in the United States. Brummer has also been interviewed by numerous news outlets, including NPR’s “Marketplace.” 

He is a highly credentialed attorney and author with extensive experience in international trade, commerce, and investment law. His research and commentary have been highly cited by the media and journals of international law.
